What our children need to learn about inclusivity
D Y Patil Dnyanshanti School
At DYPDSS, we take an effort to foster an environment of inclusivity. Why is this important? You may ask. In this blog we discuss why it is important for our children to learn about inclusivity in school. Let’s go!
What is inclusivity?
We live in a society, and at the heart of this society is the principle of cooperation. By virtue of us being members of this society, we have certain rights and certain responsibilities towards our fellow members. Some of our fellow members are at a disadvantage and do not enjoy access to even basic necessities in life. Inclusivity means the practice of providing access to opportunities and resources to those who are less fortunate in our society.
Why do we need inclusivity?
The realization that we owe something to society and our fellow human beings, is essential to a free and fair society. Inclusivity ensures that people from different sections of the society feel a sense of belonging and do not feel alienated. Inclusion is about demonstrating that collectively, we can find solutions to problems of the marginalised and move ahead collectively.
Why should children learn about inclusivity?
The basis of inclusivity are the values of respect and equality. Treating those who are less privileged, with respect and dignity. Children are more accepting and open to learning and inculcating new values. Educators are uniquely poised to help guide children to keep away from prejudice and hatred. The classroom also provides a good setting for students to demonstrate these values.
Teaching your child about inclusivity or compassion can be challenging at first. It is also important to note that children will learn about inclusivity and compassion more from the actions of adults around them, than perhaps from a lecture on inclusivity.
Another mistake we often commit while teaching our children about inclusivity is telling them that all human beings are equal. They will not be able to understand and appreciate the differences between human beings. The message should be clear, despite the differences, we should treat everyone equally and fair.
