DYPDSS Anti-Bullying Policy: Promoting a Safe and Supportive Environment

At DYPDSS School, we are committed to creating a safe, caring, and supportive learning environment where students can thrive without the fear of being bullied. Our anti-bullying policy is designed to recognize and address any form of bullying, ensuring that all students feel secure and respected.

What is Bullying?

Bullying is defined as deliberately hurtful behavior, repeated over time, where the person being bullied finds it hard to defend themselves. It can take several forms, including:

  • Physical Bullying: Hitting, kicking, theft, vandalism, and damage to personal property.
  • Verbal Bullying: Name-calling, racist, sexist, or homophobic remarks, and making fun of personal or social circumstances.
  • Indirect Bullying: Spreading rumors, social exclusion, and cyberbullying (through phones, computers, or social media).

Creating an Anti-Bullying Environment

All staff, students, and parents play a crucial role in preventing bullying. Teachers and staff are trained to recognize signs of bullying and respond immediately. Parents are encouraged to communicate with the Counselor or Coordinator regarding any concerns.

Signs of Bullying:

Victims of bullying may exhibit changes in behavior such as:

  • Becoming shy or nervous
  • Unexplained absences
  • Declining academic performance
  • Feigning illness or avoiding school

Staff are trained to be alert to these signs and are required to report them to the Counselor for further action.

Dealing with Bullies:

In the case of bullying, DYPDSS adheres to its Behavior Policy and takes the following steps:

  • First Instance: Discussion with the class teacher, and the incident is recorded in the student’s portfolio.
  • Second Instance: Counseling session with the teacher and the Counselor. Entry into the student’s portfolio.
  • Third Instance: A meeting with the Coordinator, with further recording in the portfolio.
  • Fourth Instance: Parents are contacted, and the student is removed from two co-curricular classes, assisting the teacher during this time. Entry signed by the parent.
  • Fifth Instance: A meeting with the Principal and parents, and further action is decided.

Teaching Anti-Bullying Strategies

At DYPDSS, we believe in educating students about bullying, teaching them how to recognize and respond to bullying behavior. We raise awareness through:

  • Classroom Lessons: Incorporating anti-bullying themes in the Life Skills Period.
  • School Assemblies: Holding discussions and awareness programs.
  • Annual Anti-Bullying Week: A focused week for educating and discussing bullying prevention.

During playtime, we organize inclusive activities that promote cooperation and discourage bullying. We also have Peer Mentors, Lunchtime Monitors, and Playground Pals who support the playground supervisors in maintaining a positive environment.

Steps for Dealing with Bullying Incidents

If bullying is suspected or reported, the following steps are taken:

  • The incident is dealt with immediately by the staff member involved.
  • A clear account is recorded and given to the Counselor, who interviews all parties.
  • Class teachers and parents are informed.
  • Support is provided for both the victim and the bully to prevent further incidents.

Supporting Victims of Bullying

Victims of bullying receive immediate support, including:

  • Counseling Sessions: Offering victims a safe space to discuss their experiences.
  • Continuous Reassurance: Helping them rebuild self-esteem and confidence.
  • Peer Mentoring: Providing friendship and support during lunch and playtime.

Helping Bullies

The Counselor works with students who bully others to understand the reasons behind their behavior and help them change. Parents are also involved in guiding the student towards positive behavior.

Monitoring the Anti-Bullying Policy

The school Counselor reviews the policy bi-monthly to ensure its effectiveness. The policy is available on the school’s website for easy access by parents and stakeholders.
