Anti Bullying Policy

Anti Bullying Committee

  • Principal Madam
  • Nabonita Roy
  • PalakAgarwal
  • Swathi S.
  • Ashwin Vishwanath
  • Deven Limaye
  • Divya Choudhary

Aim: The aim of the anti-bullying policy is to ensure that pupils learn in a supportive, caring and safe environment without fear of being bullied.
Bullying is recognized as anti-social behavior that affects, not just the victim, but everyone. This applies to bullying in any of its various forms: bullying from anybody and bullying directed towards anybody in any capacity, including school staff.

The Nature of Bullying:

  • Bullying can be defined as deliberately hurtful behavior, repeated over a period of time, when it is difficult for those being bullied to defend or protect themselves.
  • Three main types of bullying are commonly recognized:
    • Physical (e.g. hitting, kicking, theft, vandalism, intentional damage towards other people’s property);
    • Verbal (e.g. name calling: racist, sexist or homophobic remarks or disparaging remarks concerning social, Personal or emotional. personal disabilities, or home circumstances);
    • Indirect (e.g. spreading rumors, excluding someone from social groups, cyber bullying via e.g. mobile phones, or computers and other misuses of technology).

Developing an ‘Anti – Bullying’ School: All staff and pupils must be alert to the signs of bullying and act promptly and firmly against it in accordance with this policy. Parents must be informed about what is happening at school and have the opportunity to discuss any bullying incidents with the Counsellor or the coordinator; this applies to both victim and the bully, and any relevant bystanders who are seen to actively encourage the bullying.

The victims of bullying: Pupils who are being bullied may show changes in behavior, such as becoming shy and nervous, feigning illness, taking unusual absences or clinging to adults. There may be evidence of changes in work patterns, a lack of concentration or, in extreme cases, truanting from school. Staff are trained to be alert and recognize and report these signs to the Counsellor.

Bullies: We follow the Behavior Policy for dealing with negative behavior.
In case of any infractions in following the Behavior Policy, the procedure followed will be as below:

  • First Instance : Discussion with the class teacher, and entry in student portfolio.
  • Second instance : Counselor and class teacher will discuss and counsel the child and entry in student portfolio.
  • Third instance : Student will meet the coordinator and entry in student portfolio.
  • Fourth Instance : Parent will be called and student will be asked to refrain from attending two co-curricular classes during the week. During such time the student will assist the teacher in some routine work. Entry in student portfolio with parent signature.
  • Fifth Instance : Student and parent will meet Principal and she will decide appropriate course of action.

Teaching about bullying: It is important to raise awareness of the nature of bullying and teach children how to respond if they are involved in, or witness, an incident of bullying. It is also essential that children learn to identify what bullying is, and how it differs from normal disagreements between friends. We raise awareness through creating opportunities within the school curriculum, assemblies and holding an annual Anti bullying week. Within the curriculum, this can be done through the proper utilization of Life Skills Period. Playground activities will be organized to be inclusive and to promote collaboration and co-operation, while discouraging bullying. At lunch times, trained supervisors continue these activities. Whilst we stress that everyone should be involved in tackling bullying, we have Peer Mentors, Lunchtime Monitors, and Playground Pals with the specific role of supporting Lunchtime Supervisors in the playground.

Implementation of the policy: The following steps must be taken when dealing with incidents:

1. If bullying is suspected or reported, the incident will be dealt with immediately by the member of staff who has been approached.
2. A clear account of the incident will be recorded and given to the Counsellor who will interview all concerned separately and record the incident.
3. Class teachers will be kept informed.
4. Parents will be kept informed and called to come and meet relevant staff.
5. Relevant support put in place for the bully to prevent further incidents.

We will support victims of bullying by: Offering an immediate opportunity to discuss the experience with their counsellor.
Giving reassurance and continuous support to help to restore self-esteem and confidence.
Providing peer mentors to offer support and friendship at playtime and lunchtime.

We will support bullies by: The bully, or potential bully, may also be experiencing problems which are a cause of his/her anti-social behavior. Staff must be alert for behavior or comments which may highlight that the child needs help in dealing with concerns.

Discussing the events and their behavior with the Counselor Discovering
why the pupil became involve§Establishing the wrong doing and need to change.
Informing parents/guardians in helping to change the attitude of the pupil.

Monitoring of this policy: The school counselor will review this policy bi-monthly and assess its implementation and effectiveness. School Counselor is consulted in the development of this policy. A copy of the policy will be located on the school’s website / Front page for access by the parents/interested parties in the school.

Subject: Importance of Routines

Date:

Hello Parents,
In the current circumstances we cannot over stress the importance of maintaining a routine. With parents and children spending long hours at home it is imperative that everyone has a synchronized routine so that we do not step on each other’s toes and there is general peace and wellbeing at home.
A routine brings a semblance of order to the day and helps to get things done easily and with minimum effort. Routine helps in the following areas:

  • 1.Stress levels -Children often fear the unknown and creating a routine that works for you and your family around getting ready ,bath and meal times, nap and bedtime, housework cleaning and cooking ,playtime and family time will reduce stress levels. Routine takes out the uncertainty and allows us to feel more in control and less stressed. Routine helps us to sail through the day and feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of it.
  • 2.Self control ,self discipline and better time management - Routine helps one to remain focused, keep the discipline and work becomes smooth and efficient .One is able to pack in more in the day. Designate a time and place for everything.
  • 3.Safety - developing rituals will give the child a sense of consistency and security. It provides them with boundaries of what to expect and this is good for the well being of the child.Develop a ritual for every task that a child needs to do.
  • 4.Transitions - between activities may vary from child to child but having tried and tested routine or rituals while a child is transitioning from one activity to another will make it easier for parent and child. The routine activity sends a signal to the child that it's time to make a change. Examples of activities could be a song, a book some funny actions.
  • 5.Parental happiness - is the most important factor for the well being of a child. Happy parents make for Happy kids. Having a routine will enable every member to be happy.

The predictability and familiarity that comes with routines offers the perfect safe space that kids need to thrive.
During this period of lock down stick to a routine that is comfortable for all and takes into account the schedule of all members. Make time for fun and family time. Call us if you need any support.

Subject: Orientation Foreword

Date: 6/6/2020

Dear Parents,
Greetings of the day!
We hope and pray that you and your near and dear are all in good health and safe at home.
At DYPDSS our children are at the centre of everything we do. It is our endeavour to keep children occupied and engaged with some lessons and activities so that they are connected to school and teachers. The intention is not to pressurize you or the children. So do not force your kids into anything they do not want to do.
We were supposed to have an orientation for you in March but unfortunately that could not happen. Hence please find attached the PPT of the Orientation. In case you have any concerns kindly connect with us. We will do our best to address them in the given circumstances. This is an unprecedented situation for all of us but all of us are trying our best to meet expectations. Kindly bear with us.
At the moment we are not in a position to comment on the re-opening of schools but we will communicate as soon as we receive any guidelines from the government. Until then we will continue with the online class and will supplement it with videos, assignments and activities.
We assure you that once school begins our teachers will take care of all the social and emotional needs of our children leading to the well being of our children. Also all protocols with regard to safety and security of our children will be maintained. We have a huge infrastructure so maintaining social distancing will be an imperative part of our protocol plus we have numerous hygienic washrooms so toilet hygiene will also not be an issue.
I would conclude with a quote by Jean Chatzky-“ Resilience isn't a single skill. It's a variety of skills and coping mechanisms. To bounce back from bumps in the road as well as failures, you should focus on emphasizing the positive."So going forward let us focus on the positives of the current situation and always count our blessings.
As a meditative practice if each of you, for the next 21 days could write down a list of three different things everyday that you are grateful for would lead to a huge shift in our attitude and approach. It would take only 2 minutes of your time but the benefits would be manifold.
Thank you.

Warm Regards
Geeta Pillai
