Is too much screen time affecting a child’s health?

Children today have grown up with access to a wide range of electronic devices. A world without cell phones, iPods, and the internet is inconceivable to them. A child’s emotional behavior can be modulated by excessive screen time in a variety of ways. Their motivation and creative abilities may be limited by an overreliance on digital media. because of the rise in screen addiction, which can lead to irritation, anxiety, and impulsive actions. Moreover, excessive screen time might impair a child’s ability to read body language and learn social skills, affecting the child’s overall empathy level. The scientific literature estimates that one in four school-going children suffers from developmental delays or deficits, including language difficulties, impaired motor skills, and emotional deficiencies. Screen time is considered one of the major risk factors for preventing a child's early development. Such developmental delays can have a substantial influence on learning and serve as barriers to a child’s academic progress.

In other words, a child who spends a lot of time on screens is less likely to spend time outside playing, exercising, or engaging with friends and family. This can have a substantial impact on a child's entire development and maturation. Additionally, too much exposure to blue light on the screen can lead to sleep deprivation by inhibiting melatonin secretion. Another key consideration is to strike a balance between online and offline time.

How can parents limit their children’s screen time?

  • No use of electronic gadgets during meals.
  • No screen time in the car or while traveling.
  • Make screen limitations a regular part of your routine.
  • Explain various screen-time constraints.
  • Encouraging outdoor activities

Certain precautions can be taken to keep a child from spending too much time on screens. This will allow children to experiment with balancing the online and offline worlds.
